Bridge over the James at Eagle Rock
“Sometimes, if you aren't sure about something, you just have to jump off the bridge and grow your wings on the way down.”
 Danielle Steel

Where I am standing is on a bridge that was washed out by a flood. I am on part of the bridge that remains. The broken bridge I am on predates the American Civil War. It was used by mules to drag wagons of lime and iron ore to a foundry on my right which is also outdated and abandoned. The flood I believe happened in the 1970's and nearly washed Eagle Rock off the map. The old bridge was replaced by this one.
Mule Bridge at Eagle Rock Virginia
The remains of this bridge crosses the James River at Eagle Rock. At one time, mules pulling wagons of lime and iron ore, brought the raw materials for an old foundry behind me. The iron works is an interesting photographic study itself. Before the American Civil War and during the war it produced "pig iron" used in the molding of cannons and cannon balls. These old iron works can be found across this part of Virginia, I am sure many who drive by have no idea of what these structures were for. Tomorrow, I will post a picture of the iron works at Eagle Rock.

She glances at the photo, and the pilot light of memory flickers in her eyes. ~Frank Deford

An old abandoned country store, found on a single lane gravel path, near Eagle Rock Virginia. While this whole area is beautiful, the economy in this area is quite depressed.
